Mexican Petunia
(Ruellia simplex)
The Mexican petunia prefers a sunny to semi-shady, warm, and sheltered location in a tropical to subtropical climate. It is very adaptable and grows quickly, but can spread extensively in warm regions.
The soil should be loose, humusy to sandy, and well-draining. A slightly acidic to neutral pH between approximately 5.5 and 7.0 is ideal; regular moisture is preferred, but short dry periods are well tolerated.
The plant grows as a herbaceous perennial and usually reaches 0.5 to 1 meter in height, but can spread across an area. It is primarily valued for its violet-blue, funnel-shaped flowers.
