Water chestnut

Water chestnut

(Pachira aquatica)

The water chestnut prefers a warm, sunny to semi-shady and very sheltered location in a tropical to subtropical climate. It requires regular watering and can tolerate temporarily very moist to slightly boggy conditions, as long as there is no permanent waterlogging in the pot.

An ideal soil is loose, humus-rich, and well-draining, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH value of approximately 5.5 to 7.0. Good drainage remains important despite its tolerance to moisture, to prevent root rot.

Under optimal conditions, it can produce flowers and decorative, edible seeds in large fruit capsules after about 4 to 8 years. The plant typically reaches a height of about 3 to 10 meters and grows as an evergreen tree with a characteristically braided trunk when cultivated.
