Tamarind

Tamarind

(Tamarindus indica)

The tamarind prefers a sunny, warm, and rather dry location in a tropical to subtropical climate. It is heat and drought tolerant but susceptible to frost.

The soil should be deep, sandy to loamy, and very well-drained. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH value between approximately 6.0 and 8.0 is ideal; waterlogging should be avoided.

The plant grows as a large, long-lived tree, usually reaching 10 to 25 meters in height. It typically bears its first fruits after about 5 to 8 years under good conditions.
