Black pepper
(Piper nigrum)
Black pepper prefers a partially shaded, warm, and very humid location. It is sensitive to frost and only grows reliably in tropical climates.
The soil should be humus-rich, loose, and well-draining. A slightly acidic pH (approx. 5.5–6.5) is ideal. The plant requires high humidity and consistent watering; waterlogging should be avoided.
The plant grows as an evergreen climbing plant and can reach several meters in height, requiring support. It is highly valued worldwide as an important spice, primarily for its fruits.
