Black elderberry
(European elder)
The elder prefers a sunny to semi-shady, warm location. It is very robust and highly frost-hardy.
The soil should be humous, loose, and fresh to moist. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH value (approx. 6.0–7.5) is ideal. The plant also tolerates temporarily wetter soils, but waterlogging should not occur permanently.
The plant grows as a densely branched shrub or small tree, usually reaching a height of 3 to 8 meters. It is valued primarily for its flowers and berries as a useful and medicinal plant.
