The almond tree prefers a sunny, warm, and as dry as possible location with good air circulation. It requires regular watering during the establishment phase and in longer dry periods but cannot tolerate waterlogging.
An ideal soil is loose, deep, well-drained, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH value of approximately 6.0 to 7.5. Calcareous soils are generally well tolerated.
Under optimal conditions, it begins to bear fruit after about 3 to 5 years, developing the familiar almonds in a velvety fruit hull. The tree usually reaches a height of about 4 to 8 meters and forms a broad, loosely structured crown.
