Eastern Cottonwood
(eastern cottonwood)
The Canadian black poplar prefers a full-sun, warm, and open location. It is very frost-hardy but grows best in temperate to subtropical climates with plenty of water availability.
The soil should be deep, humus to loamy, and well-draining. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH value between approximately 6.0 and 7.5 is ideal. The plant requires a lot of water and grows particularly well in riverine or floodplain locations. Waterlogging is generally well tolerated, but drought is not.
The plant grows as a very fast-growing, large deciduous tree, usually reaching 20 to 40 meters in height. It is primarily valued for its extreme growth, good timber production, and suitability as a shade and windbreak tree.
