Calabash tree

The Calabash tree prefers a full-sun, warm, and very sheltered location in a tropical to subtropical climate. It is sensitive to frost and requires consistently high temperatures.

The soil should be loose, humusy to sandy, and well-draining. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value between approximately 5.5 and 7.0 is ideal; regular moisture is tolerated, but waterlogging should be avoided.

The plant grows as a small to medium-sized tree, typically reaching 4 to 10 meters in height. It produces large, hard fruits (calabashes), which usually appear after about 3 to 5 years.
