Cocoa

(Theobroma cacao)

The cacao tree prefers a semi-shady, warm and very humid location in a tropical climate. It is extremely sensitive to frost and requires stable temperatures as well as high humidity.

The soil should be humus-rich, deep, and very well-drained. A slightly acidic pH value between approximately 5.0 and 6.5 is ideal; regular moisture is important, and waterlogging should be avoided.

The plant grows as a small tree and usually reaches 4 to 8 meters in height. It typically bears its first cacao pods after about 3 to 5 years under good conditions.
