Japanese Sago Palm / Cycas

The Japanese Sago Palm / Cycas prefers a sunny to semi-shady, warm and sheltered location. It is relatively robust, but only slightly frost-tolerant and grows best in mild to subtropical climates.

The soil should be very well-drained, sandy to loamy, and rather poor in nutrients. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value (approx. 5.5–6.5) is ideal. Waterlogging should definitely be avoided.

The plant grows very slowly and forms a short, palm-like trunk with a crown of stiff, pinnate leaves. It usually reaches 1 to 3 meters in height, sometimes more under very good conditions. It is particularly valued for its exotic, palm-like appearance and its extremely long lifespan.
