Japanese Raisin Tree / Hovenia
(Japanese Raisin Tree)
The Japanese raisin tree prefers a full-sun, warm, and sheltered location. It is relatively frost-hardy and copes well with temperate to subtropical climates.
The soil should be loose, deep, and well-drained. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH value between approximately 6.0 and 7.5 is ideal. The plant tolerates dry periods quite well; waterlogging should be avoided.
The plant grows as a medium-sized deciduous tree and usually reaches 8 to 15 meters in height, sometimes more under good conditions. It is mainly valued for its sweet-tasting, fleshy fruit stalks ("raisin branches") and its decorative effect.
