Japanese medlar

Japanese medlar

(Eriobotrya japonica)

The Japanese loquat prefers a sunny to semi-shady, warm and sheltered location. It is relatively frost-tolerant and well-suited for mild subtropical to temperate regions.

The soil should be humus-rich, loose, and well-drained. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value between approximately 5.5 and 6.5 is ideal, consistent moisture is preferred, and waterlogging should be avoided.

The plant grows as an evergreen tree or shrub and usually reaches 3 to 8 meters in height. It typically bears its first fruits after about 3 to 5 years under good conditions.
