ZZ Plant / Zamioculcas
(Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ plant / Zamioculcas prefers a bright to semi-shady location but also copes well with low light. It is sensitive to frost and is excellent as a houseplant or for sheltered areas in tropical climates.
The soil should be loose, humus-rich, and very well-draining. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value between approximately 5.5 and 7.0 is ideal. The plant stores water in its rhizomes and should therefore be watered sparingly. Waterlogging quickly leads to root rot.
The plant grows as an evergreen, herbaceous perennial and usually reaches 50 cm to 1.2 meters in height. It rarely produces flowers and is mainly valued for its shiny, dark green, and very low-maintenance leaves.
All parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals and are mildly toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
