Shrimp plant
(Justicia brandegeeana)
The Shrimp Plant (Justicia brandegeeana) prefers a semi-shady to sunny, warm, and sheltered location in a subtropical to tropical climate. It is sensitive to frost and is usually kept as a container or houseplant in cooler regions.
The soil should be loose, humus-rich, and well-draining. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value between approximately 5.5 and 6.5 is ideal, and consistent but moderate moisture is preferred; waterlogging should be avoided.
The plant grows as an evergreen shrub and usually reaches 0.5 to 1.5 meters in height. It does not produce edible fruit and is primarily valued for its striking, shrimp-like bracts.
