Bottle plant

Bottle plant

(Jatropha podagrica)

The bottle plant prefers a sunny to bright, warm, and dry location. It is sensitive to frost and thrives best at temperatures above 15 °C.

The soil should be very well-draining, sandy to mineral. A slightly acidic to neutral pH value between about 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. It requires only moderate watering and tolerates drought much better than waterlogging.

The plant grows as a succulent small shrub with a characteristically thickened, bottle-shaped trunk and usually reaches 0.5 to 1 meter in height. It is particularly valued for its unusual growth and its bright red inflorescences.

All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, are poisonous and should not be consumed.
