Sweet chestnut
(Sweet chestnut)
The sweet chestnut prefers a sunny to semi-shady location in warm, temperate to subtropical regions. It requires regular watering in its first few years, but is later relatively drought-tolerant and cannot withstand waterlogging.
Ideally, the soil should be deep, loose, and well-drained with a slightly acidic pH of about 5.0 to 6.5. Calcareous soils are less well tolerated and can impair growth.
Under optimal conditions, it begins to bear fruit after about 4 to 8 years, producing nutritious sweet chestnuts. The tree usually reaches a height of about 15 to 30 meters and develops a large, sprawling crown.
