Real Vanilla

True vanilla prefers a semi-shady, warm, and very sheltered location with high humidity. It is frost-sensitive and only grows reliably in tropical to subtropical climates.

The soil should be very loose, humic, and well-draining. A slightly acidic pH (approx. 5.5–6.5) is ideal. The plant requires consistent moisture and very good drainage; waterlogging should be avoided.

The plant grows as an evergreen climbing orchid and can reach several meters in length, absolutely requiring a climbing aid. It is particularly valued for its fermented pods (vanilla beans) as a precious spice.
