Blood lime
(Citrus australasica var. sanguinea)
The Blood Lime prefers a warm, sunny, and sheltered location with high humidity. It requires regular watering, with the soil being consistently moist but very well-drained.
An ideal soil is loose, humus-rich, and well-drained with a slightly acidic pH value of about 5.5 to 6.5. Waterlogging should absolutely be avoided, as the roots are very sensitive.
Under optimal conditions, it begins to bear fruit after about 3 to 5 years, forming the characteristic red to pink "caviar pearls" inside the fruit. The plant usually reaches a height of about 2 to 4 meters and grows as a slow-growing, thorny shrub or small tree.
