The Iresine prefers a sunny to partially shaded, warm and sheltered location with high humidity. It requires regular watering, with the soil remaining evenly moist but well-drained.

An ideal soil is humus-rich, loose, and nutrient-rich with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 5.5 to 6.5. Waterlogging should be avoided as the roots are sensitive.

The plant does not produce edible fruits but small, inconspicuous flowers and is cultivated primarily for its strikingly red to purple foliage. It usually reaches a height of about 30 to 80 cm and grows as a bushy, decorative ornamental plant.
