Alocasias

Alocasias

(Alocasia spp.)

Alocasia prefers a bright to semi-shady, warm, and sheltered location without direct sun. It is sensitive to frost and is usually cultivated as a houseplant or greenhouse plant.

The soil should be loose, humus-rich, and very well-draining. A slightly acidic pH value between approximately 5.5 and 6.5 is ideal. Consistent but moderate moisture is preferred; waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.

The plant grows from tubers or rhizomes and forms large, striking, often arrow- or heart-shaped leaves. Depending on the species, it usually reaches a height of 0.5 to 2 meters. It is particularly valued for its exotic, highly decorative leaf structure.

All parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate and are poisonous to humans and animals if ingested.
