Description

Origin
Jackfruit, also known as Artocarpus heterophyllus, is an impressive tropical fruit that ranks among the largest tree fruits in the world. The fruit has an irregular, spiky green shell and can reach enormous weights, often up to 35 kilograms. Originally from the tropical rainforests of South and Southeast Asia, jackfruit is now widespread in many warm climates around the world.

Growth and Appearance
The jackfruit tree is a large, evergreen tree with an expansive, dense crown and glossy green, lanceolate leaves. It can reach heights of up to 20 meters and requires plenty of space to spread out. The flowers are small and inconspicuous but have an intense odor that many find unpleasant. The juicy, yellow flesh consists of numerous fleshy individual fruits arranged around large, hard seeds.

Cultivation and Care
These trees thrive best in warm, humid climates with plenty of sunlight. They prefer well-drained, nutrient-rich soils and require regular watering, especially during dry periods. Occasional pruning can promote growth and facilitate harvesting.

Taste, Use, and Fruit
The flesh has a sweet, slightly aromatic taste and a meaty consistency reminiscent of chicken or pork. It can be eaten raw or processed into a variety of dishes, including curries, stews, desserts, and snacks. Even the seeds and immature fruits can be cooked and eaten.

Harvest Time
They typically begin bearing fruit about three to four years after planting. The main harvesting time for jackfruits varies by region but often occurs during the warm months of the year.

Pollination
Pollination is carried out by insects such as bees and beetles, which carry pollen from flower to flower. The tree is typically self-pollinating, although a greater variety of pollinators can lead to better fruit development.
