Carnation

The carnation prefers a sunny and warm location with good air circulation. It only needs moderate watering and tolerates short dry periods well, while waterlogging should definitely be avoided.

Ideally, the soil should be well-drained, rather sandy-loamy and nutrient-poor to moderately fertile, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH value of about 6.5 to 7.5. Soils that are too nutrient-rich can reduce flowering.

The plants do not produce edible fruits, but numerous, often fragrant flowers in shades of white, pink, red, or violet. Depending on the species, they usually reach a height of about 10 to 80 cm and grow as compact, sometimes cushion-forming ornamental plants.
