Description

Appearance and Origin
The Siriguela, also known as Jocote, is a fruit that comes from the tree Spondias purpurea. The fruit has an oval shape and a smooth, thin skin that can be greenish-yellow to reddish in color. The flesh is juicy and sweet-tart in flavor, surrounding a large, flat pit. Originally from the tropical regions of the Americas, Siriguela is native to Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of South America.

Growth
It is a medium-sized tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters. It has a spreading crown and dark green, feathery leaves that typically spiral at the end of the branches. The flowers of the Siriguela tree are small and inconspicuous, forming in dense clusters along the branches.

Cultivation and Care
These trees prefer tropical or subtropical climates and thrive best in well-draining soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. They require plenty of sunlight and regular watering, especially during dry periods. The tree is relatively low-maintenance and only requires occasional pruning to maintain shape and remove dead branches.

Taste, Use, and Fruit
The fruit has a juicy, sweet-tart flesh with a distinctive flavor. It can be eaten fresh and is often processed into juice, sorbets, ice cream, and other desserts. The fruits are rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, considered a refreshing treat in the tropics.

Harvest Time
They typically begin bearing fruit after about 3 to 4 years. The main harvest time for Siriguela fruit is usually late spring to early summer, although the exact harvest time may vary depending on location and climate.

Pollination
They are typically self-pollinating and do not require pollination from other trees to produce fruit. However, the flowers are visited by bees and other pollinators that can contribute to pollination.
