Description

Origin
The Sakura or ornamental cherry (Prunus serrulata) is a species of plant belonging to the genus Prunus in the Rosaceae family. Originally from East Asia, especially Japan, China, and Korea, the Sakura is a symbol of beauty and transience due to its spectacular flowering, and is often associated with Japanese culture and spring.

Growth and Appearance
It is a medium to large-sized tree that can reach heights of up to 12 meters. It is distinguished by having a wide, spreading crown, becoming an impressive source of shade. The leaves are oval to lanceolate, green, and serrulate, meaning they have serrated edges. The characteristic flowers of the Sakura are pink or white, and appear before the leaf buds in spring, in dense clusters along the branches.

Cultivation and Care
The ornamental cherry prefers a sunny location with well-drained and fertile soil. It is relatively undemanding and can grow in various soil types, as long as they are not too compacted or wet. Regular watering is especially important during dry periods and during the first years after planting, to promote healthy growth. Occasional pruning can be done to maintain the shape of the crown and remove dead branches.

Usage
Due to its stunning flowering, it is often planted as an ornamental plant in gardens, parks, and avenues. It is also a popular motif in landscape design and is often used as a focal point in Japanese gardens. Additionally, the Sakura is used in many countries for festivals and celebrations to commemorate the arrival of spring.

Pollination
The flowers are mainly visited by bees and other pollinating insects. Pollination is crucial for fruit production, which can occur in some varieties of ornamental cherry.
