Appearance and Origin
Portulaca, commonly known as purslane, is a genus of plants in the Portulacaceae family, encompassing a variety of succulents. These plants are distributed across various parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. Portulaca is often cultivated as an ornamental plant and is known for its colorful flowers and succulent leaves. The flowers can come in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, pink, and red, and usually open in sunny conditions.

Growth & Blooming Period
It is a perennial plant that is grown as an annual in warm climates. It has a low, creeping growth habit, forming dense mats of fleshy, cone-shaped leaves. The blooming period typically extends from spring to fall, with the flowers often appearing throughout the summer. Portulaca thrives best in sunny locations and tolerates dry conditions well, making it ideal for rock gardens, dry walls, and hanging baskets.

Cultivation and Care
It is an extremely low-maintenance plant that requires little attention. It prefers well-draining soils and tolerates drought, so it’s important not to overwater to avoid waterlogging. Excessive moisture can lead to root rot. A sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal for Portulaca growth. This plant can also be grown in pots and containers as long as it provides enough space for its root system.

Pollination
Portulaca flowers are typically self-pollinating, meaning they can pollinate themselves without the need for pollinators such as bees or butterflies. The flowers open during the day when the sun is shining and close at night or in inclement weather. When the flowers open, they release pollen, which is then transferred to the female part of the flower to enable fertilization. This way, Portulaca plants can continuously reproduce and produce new flowers.
