Description

Origin
The Peteribí (Cordia trichotoma), also known as Cordia trichotoma, is a tree native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America. It is widely distributed in countries such as Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay.

Growth and Appearance
It is a medium-sized tree that typically reaches heights of 10 to 15 meters, with a spreading crown and a thick, branching structure. The leaves are oval to lanceolate and medium-sized. They are dark green and have a slightly hairy surface. The flowers of the Peteribí are small, white, and fragrant, forming dense clusters. The fruits are small, round berries that are initially green and later turn dark purple when ripe.

Cultivation and Care
The Peteribí thrives best in well-drained soils and full sun. It is relatively hardy and tolerates drought as well as temporary flooding. Young seedlings should be regularly watered until established. Occasional pruning may be required to shape the crown and promote growth.

Use
It has diverse uses. Its wood is of high quality and is used in furniture construction, instrument making, and various crafts. The fruits are edible and are sometimes consumed locally. Additionally, the Peteribí is often planted as a shade tree in landscaped gardens, parks, and avenues.

Pollination
The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects attracted by their nectar. Pollination occurs through the transport of pollen from one flower to another. After successful pollination, the fruits develop, which then contain seeds that serve for the tree’s reproduction.
