Description

Origin
Araucaria angustifolia, also known as the Brazilian Araucaria or Paraná pine, originates from southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. It predominantly grows in subtropical forests and is a characteristic tree of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. This tree species plays an important role in the ecosystem and is also culturally and economically significant for the indigenous population.

Growth, Appearance, and Characteristics
It is an evergreen conifer that can reach heights of up to 50 meters. The tree has a straight, upright trunk covered with scaly, gray-brown bark. The crown is initially pyramidal and becomes broader and umbrella-shaped with age. The leaves are needle-like, pointed, and arranged in a spiral around the branches, giving the tree a distinctive appearance. Male cones are elongated and can be up to 10 cm long, while female cones are spherical and can reach up to 20 cm in diameter.

Cultivation and Care
It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils and a location with full sun to partial shade. The tree is adapted to subtropical climates and can tolerate temperatures down to -5°C. When cultivating, it is important to ensure that the tree has enough space to reach its full size. Young trees should be watered regularly to promote healthy growth, while older trees require less water. Regular monitoring for pests and diseases is important, although the tree is generally considered resilient. Occasional fertilization with a balanced fertilizer can support growth.

Taste, Use, and Fruit
The seeds, known as Pinhões, are edible and have a sweet, nutty flavor. They are an important component of traditional Brazilian cuisine and are consumed roasted, cooked, or ground into flour. The seeds are rich in carbohydrates and proteins and are often used in festivities and as a food source. Apart from their culinary use, Araucaria angustifolia is also a sought-after ornamental tree due to its unusual and exotic appearance.

Harvest Time
The cones take about two years to mature. The harvest of the seeds occurs from late summer to autumn. It may take several years for a tree to produce its first cones, typically between 12 and 15 years, depending on growth conditions and care.

Pollination
Araucaria angustifolia is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Pollination occurs by wind. Male trees produce pollen cones that release pollen, which is then taken up by female trees to enable seed production. Therefore, it is necessary to have both male and female trees nearby to ensure successful pollination and seed production.
