Description

Origin
The Narrow-leaved Melia / Paraiso, also known as Paradise tree or Cedro, scientifically referred to as Melia azedarach, is a deciduous tree belonging to the Meliaceae family. Native to the temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, but it has also been introduced to other parts of the world and is now found in many regions with similar climates.

Growth and Appearance
It is a medium to large-sized tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters. It forms a dense, spreading crown with an irregular growth habit. The leaves are compound and have a characteristic narrow lanceolate shape, which gives the plant its name. The flowers are fragrant, small, and lavender to violet-pink in color, arranged in large clusters. The fruits are spherical berries that are initially green and turn yellow to orange as they mature.

Cultivation and Care
The Paraiso tree is a hardy plant that can thrive in different types of soil as long as it is well-drained. It prefers full sun but also tolerates partial shade. The plant is relatively drought-resistant and only needs occasional watering once established. Annual pruning may be necessary to shape the crown and control growth.

Use
It is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant in parks, gardens, and avenues due to its attractive flowers and fruits. Its wood is sometimes used for furniture and other woodworking, although it is not as valuable as that of other mahogany species. In some cultures, the fruits of the plant are used to make insecticides.

Pollination
The flowers are primarily pollinated by bees and other insects attracted to the sweet nectar. Pollination leads to fruit formation and allows the plant to reproduce.
