Description

Appearance and Origin
The luffa sponge, also known as the sponge gourd, is a plant from the Cucurbitaceae family. Originally from tropical regions of Asia, it is now cultivated worldwide. The sponge is made from the dried fruit of this plant.

Growth
The luffa plant is a fast-growing vine with large, heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers. It can grow up to 10 meters high and requires a support structure to develop. The fruits are elongated and can grow up to 30 cm long. When ripe, they dry out, forming the familiar sponge.

Cultivation and Care
They thrive best in warm, sunny regions with well-draining soil. The plants require regular watering, especially during dry periods, to produce healthy fruits. They can be grown either directly in the ground or in large containers and need a climbing structure for their growth.

Use and Fruit
The fruit is not cultivated for consumption as it has a fibrous and tough texture and can have a bitter taste. Instead, the dried sponge is used as a natural cleanser and exfoliator for the skin. It is particularly popular in the cosmetics industry and as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic sponges.

Harvest Time
The first fruits can be harvested after about 3 to 4 months from sowing. The fruits should be harvested while they are still green and firm. After harvesting, they are peeled to remove the fibers and then hung up to dry.

Pollination
The flowers are mainly pollinated by bees and other insects. Pollination is important for fruit formation and yield. In some cases, pollination can also be done manually to improve fruit formation.
