Description

Appearance and Origin
The longan, also known as dragon’s eye (Dimocarpus longan), is a tropical fruit belonging to the soapberry family. Originally hailing from Southeast Asia, particularly China and Vietnam, the fruit grows on evergreen trees that can reach up to 10 meters in height.

Growth
They feature a dense, spreading crown with dark green, glossy leaves. The fruits hang in large clusters on the branches and are spherical with a leathery, brown shell covered in small spikes. The flesh is translucent and has a smooth, juicy texture.

Cultivation and Care
Longan trees thrive best in warm, humid climates and prefer well-drained soils. They require regular watering and occasional pruning to promote healthy growth and increase fruit production. Longan trees can be propagated from seeds as well as through grafting.

Taste, Use, and Fruit
The fruit has a sweet, slightly spicy taste and is often eaten raw or added to desserts, salads, and beverages. It is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients and is enjoyed both fresh and dried. In traditional Chinese medicine, longan is often used to promote health and well-being.

Harvest Time
The fruits are typically harvested in late summer to autumn, about 2-3 years after the tree is planted. The first fruits may appear as early as the third or fourth year after planting, depending on growing conditions.

Pollination
The trees are self-fruitful, but pollination by bees and other insects can increase fruit production. It is recommended to plant multiple trees to ensure better pollination and higher fruit yield.
