Description

Appearance and Origin
Geraniums, botanically known as Pelargonium, are popular ornamental plants appreciated for their colorful flowers and diverse leaf shapes. They originate from the temperate regions of Southern Africa, particularly countries like South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Today, they are widely distributed in gardens, parks, and as indoor plants worldwide.

Growth and Appearance
They grow as herbaceous plants that can be either upright or trailing depending on the species. The leaves are typically lobed or serrated, green in color, sometimes with a slightly hairy surface. The flowers are typically arranged in large umbels and can appear in various colors such as red, pink, white, or violet. Some varieties have bi-colored petals that make them especially attractive.

Cultivation and Care
Geraniums thrive best in sunny locations with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. They require regular watering, but waterlogging should be avoided to prevent root rot. Geraniums are relatively low-maintenance and can be grown in pots, window boxes, or directly in the garden. They are also tolerant of drier conditions as long as they are watered regularly.

Flowering Period
The main flowering period usually extends from spring to autumn, although under favorable conditions, they can bloom throughout the year. The flowers are often abundant and attract numerous pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, which contribute to pollination.

Pollination
Geraniums are primarily pollinated by insects attracted to their striking flowers. Bees, butterflies, and other flying insects play a significant role in transferring pollen from flower to flower, leading to seed formation and plant reproduction.
