Description

Appearance and Origin

Clusia originates from the tropical regions of the Americas, particularly the Caribbean, Central, and South America. It belongs to the Clusiaceae family and in its natural environment is known as a robust tree or shrub that often grows near the coast. Its name honors the French botanist Charles de l’Écluse.

Growth and Appearance
The plant is characterized by its thick, glossy leaves, which are oval to round and dark green. It can grow as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of up to 20 meters in nature, while in indoor culture it usually remains more compact. The branches are sturdy, and the leaves are arranged oppositely, giving it a dense, lush appearance.

Cultivation and Care
It prefers bright, indirect light conditions and can tolerate some direct morning sunlight. The soil should be well-draining, with a mix of potting soil and some sand being ideal. During the growth period from spring to autumn, regular watering is necessary, avoiding waterlogging. In winter, watering can be reduced. It also benefits from regular fertilization during the growth phase and occasional leaf cleaning to remove dust and improve photosynthesis.

Blooming Period
In its natural environment, Clusia blooms mainly in spring and summer. The flowers are small, white to light pink, and pleasantly fragrant. As a houseplant, it rarely blooms, but under optimal conditions, it can also bloom indoors.

Pollination
Pollination in nature is mainly carried out by insects such as bees and butterflies. In indoor cultivation, pollination is less relevant as the plant rarely produces seeds. In tropical gardens, the presence of insects can promote pollination, leading to the formation of fruits that contain small black seeds.
