Description

Origin
The Chocolate Persimmon ‘Cioccolatino’ (Diospyros kaki ‘Cioccolatino’) is a variety of persimmon known for its distinctive appearance and unique flavor. Originally from East Asia, particularly China and Japan, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The ‘Cioccolatino’ variety is a newer cultivar prized for its dark skin and chocolatey aroma.

Growth, Appearance, and Characteristics
The ‘Cioccolatino’ is a medium-sized tree that can reach a height of about 5 to 8 meters. It has a spreading crown with glossy green leaves that turn attractive golden-yellow in the fall before dropping. The fruits are round to oval-shaped with a deep brown to black skin reminiscent of dark chocolate. They can weigh up to 200 grams and are about the size of regular persimmons.

Cultivation and Care
Persimmons prefer a sunny location with well-drained soil. They should be protected from strong winds as this can affect fruit production. The tree requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, to ensure healthy growth. Regular pruning promotes air circulation and ensures even fruit set.

Taste, Use, and Fruit
The fruits have sweet and juicy flesh with an intense flavor reminiscent of chocolate. They can be eaten raw and are also excellent for making desserts, jams, or juice.

Harvest Time
They are harvested in late autumn to winter when the fruits reach full maturity. The first fruits can typically be harvested about two to three years after planting.

Pollination
Persimmon trees are self-fruitful, so they can self-pollinate. However, additional pollination by bees or other pollinating insects can improve fruit production.
