Description

Appearance and Origin
Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is an evergreen plant known for its dense, compact leaves and versatile use. Originally from Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, its characteristic dense structure and dark green leaves make it a popular choice for hedges, topiaries, and garden art.

Growth & Blooming Period
It can reach a considerable height of up to 5 meters, although it is often kept at a lower height through pruning to serve as a hedge or formal structure. The blooming period of the common box varies depending on the location but can occur in spring and is often inconspicuous. The flowers are greenish-yellow and arranged in dense clusters.

Cultivation and Care
Boxwood prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shady location. It is a hardy plant that tolerates drought but requires regular watering during dry periods, especially in the first years of growth. Regular pruning promotes a dense, compact form and keeps the plant healthy. Boxwood is generally resistant to pests and diseases but can be affected by fungal infections under certain conditions.

Pollination
Pollination mainly occurs through the wind. Its inconspicuous flowers produce pollen that can be transported by insects such as bees and flies, although they do not play a major role in pollination. Since boxwood is mostly cultivated as an ornamental plant, fruit formation is rarely significant as many varieties do not develop fruits.
