Description

Origin
The African Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata) is an imposing evergreen tree native to the tropical regions of Africa. Originally found in West Africa, it is now widely distributed in many other tropical areas as an ornamental tree and shade provider.

Growth and Appearance
It is known for its striking flowers and lush foliage. It can reach heights of up to 25 meters and forms a wide, spreading crown. The leaves are large, leathery, and opposite. They can measure up to 45 centimeters long and are dark green in color. The tree’s characteristic flowers resemble tulips and are colored in bright orange or red. They form large, conical clusters that appear at the tips of branches and provide a stunning sight during blooming.

Cultivation and Care
The African Tulip Tree prefers warm, sunny locations and thrives best in moist, well-drained soils. However, it is relatively hardy and tolerates slightly acidic or alkaline soils. Young plants should be watered regularly until established; after that, they are relatively drought-tolerant. Regular pruning may be necessary to shape the crown and control growth.

Use
Due to its striking flowers and lush foliage, it is frequently planted as an ornamental tree in parks, gardens, and avenues. It also provides valuable shade and sun protection, making it a popular choice for landscapers in tropical and subtropical regions.

Pollination
The flowers are pollinated by a variety of insects, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The large, vibrant flowers and sweet nectar attract these pollinators and contribute to the plant’s reproduction.
